Q. When the groom cancels the wedding, should he be expected to pay for the deposits made by the bride for her dress, as well as the balance due on her dress? Also, is he responsible for paying for the bridesmaids’ dresses? The dresses were paid for however, the bridesmaids have not altered themin anyway. The bride is expecting repayment for her dress as well as the bridesmaids’ dresses – please advise. Would he also reimburse her for the deposit she made to the photographer?
A. No, he has no obligation to pay the expenses incurred by the bride or her family or her attendants, although it is very nice if he can help contribute toward those expenditures, which were made in good faith. Even though she must return the engagement ring to him, he has no requirement to reimburse anything contracted by the bride’s family. The bride should reimburse her attendants (and then she owns the dresses which should be given to her in return so she can sell them or keep them, as she wishes). Whether he helps defray some of this cost is his choice.
