Q: What’s the proper way to handle mealtime prayers when we have guests? Many of our friends practice different religions, and we don’t want to make anyone uneasy.
A: If you normally say grace at home before meals, it’s fine to do so when you have guests. They certainly don’t have to participate, other than remaining respectfully silent. You might want to ask one of your guests to give the blessing at another meal if they’re staying more than one night, so they’ll have the opportunity to observe their own rituals. But mention it before sitting down to dinner, so that no one’s put on the spot.
